What is ayurveda
Ayurveda (a Sanskrit word that means “science of life” or “knowledge of life”) is a ancient system of medicine that originated in India over 5,000 years ago, it has many practices all aimed at maintaining wellness within the human body and also the mind and soul. Ayurveda utilizes natural medicines from the earth, nutrition, lifestyle changes and meditation. Ayurveda takes into account the mind, body and spirit connection which modern medicine does not. Its all about creating balance and harmony within so can connect fully to life or the universe and life our best lifes!
How was ayurveda taught ?
In india ancient ayurveda masters would teach through oral tradition from accomplished practitioners to devoted disciples ( a bit like going to college and learning from a teacher ) A slice of ayurveda was set to print in the vedas but most of the teachings remain secret. The teachings have been preserved by buddhist monks. Many of the modern natural healing systems in the west have the roots in ayurveda.
The first ever ayurveda school
In 800 BCE a famous physician named punarvasu attreya founded the first ayurveda school and his pupils recorded lots of information on different ailments and treatments etc. This information would later influence later practitioners.
The buddha was a follower of ayurveda
The buddha born around 550 BCE was a fan and follower of this practice and so with the spread of monks all over tibet, korea, sri lanka and so on helped the spread of ayurveda. The rise of Islamic medicine supressed ayurveda in certain regions and also the British in the 19th century said that it was a load of hogwash and superstition and banned any one teaching ayurveda in Britain. Isn`t that interesting ?
